FEDERAL CIRCUIT ROUNDUP


Please join us for a discussion and roundup of recent Federal Circuit cases of relevance to IP practitioners.  We will cover the following topics:

• Section 101 patentability decisions, including Enfish, BASCOM, and TLI.

• Federal Circuit reversals of obviousness determinations at the PTAB. 

• TC Heartland and Venue: Will plaintiffs still be able to file in E.D. Texas?

 

PANELISTS:


Daniel P. Muino – Partner, IP Litigation Practice Group, Morrison & Foerster


Mr. Muino is an intellectual property litigator with over a decade of experience litigating patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret matters in various federal district courts and at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).  Mr. Muino has handled high-stakes IP cases between competitors and defended clients against non-practicing patent holders, and has been involved in a number of jury trials and arbitration hearings.  He is also an editor of the firm’s MoFo@ITC web blog, which covers developments in ITC law and practice.  Mr. Muino attended law school at the University of Chicago where he was awarded the Thomas R. Mulroy Prize for Excellence in Appellate Advocacy.  


Brian R. Matsui – Partner, Appellate and Supreme Court Practice Group, Morrison Foerster


Mr. Matsui has substantial experience in the federal courts of appeals, having represented clients in appeals in almost every federal appellate court. He has briefed and argued many cases in the Federal Circuit involving patent matters including appeals from decisions from the PTAB.  He has also been involved in more than 35 cases before the Supreme Court of the United States.  Mr. Matsui attended law school at Stanford where he was elected to the Order of the Coif.  Before joining private practice, he clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy of the Supreme Court.


Fahd H. Patel – Associate, IP Litigation Practice Group, Morrison & Foerster


Mr. Patel is an intellectual property litigator with experience litigating in federal district courts and before the U.S.I.T.C., especially in matters relating to technology and computer software/hardware.  Mr. Patel is also involved with inter partes review and covered business method review proceedings before the PTAB.  While attending law school Mr. Patel worked as an examiner at the U.S. Patent Office and later as a patent agent.  Mr. Patel attended law school at Georgetown University.
