Pro Bono Opportunity - Advice & Referral Clinic

  • Saturday, September 14, 2013
  • 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
  • Bread for the City, 1525 7th Street, NW, Shaw-Howard University Metro

The South Asian Bar Association is looking for volunteer lawyers and legal assistants/paralegals interested in staffing the Saturday morning, June 8, 2013, Advice & Referral Clinic. This is an excellent opportunity to provide discrete, time-limited pro bono assistance. At the Clinic, volunteer lawyers meet with D.C. residents to discuss legal problems that could involve bankruptcy/debt collection, consumer law, employment law, family law, health law, housing and landlord/tenant, personal injury, probate (wills and medical directives), public benefits (welfare, SSI, etc.) and tax law.

No specific background or experience in the substantive legal areas is necessary to participate in the Clinic. There is a half hour orientation for volunteers in the morning before the Clinic opens to clients at 10 am.  Volunteer lawyers provide legal advice and information and brief services.  If Clinic volunteers cannot resolve the questions or problems at the clinic or with brief follow up, it may be possible to refer clients to a legal or social service provider appropriately suited to handle the case or volunteers can choose to continue to assist the clients with their legal problems. Experienced lawyers are on hand for the volunteer lawyers to consult with if necessary, along with access to numerous online resource s designed to support volunteers during the clinic.

DATE:  Saturday, September 14, 2013
TIME:  9:30 am (until approximately 1:00 pm)
LOCATION:  Bread for the City, N.W. location (1525 7th Street, NW)    METRO: Shaw-Howard University on the Green Line. There is a parking lot next to the building and ample street parking.
