2019 11th Annual SABA-DC Public Interest Benefit Gala

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the South Asian Bar Association of Washington, D.C. will host its 11th Annual Public Interest Benefit Gala. The Gala, taking place at the Mead Center for American Theater, will bring together attorneys and other professionals from other law firms, lobbying firms, corporations, government, academia, and nonprofit organizations from the D.C. metropolitan area to raise funds for SABA-DC and its worthwhile Public Interest initiatives.

Thanks to the generous support of law firm, corporate, and individual sponsors, SABA-DC has been able to provide necessary financial assistance to law students every year through the SABA-DC’s Public Interest Fellowship program. Getting Your Worth: Salary & Promotion Negotiations

We are excited to present Part II of SABA-DC’s Series on Professional Development and will be teaming up with SABA North America's  South Asian Women Attorney's Network.

Often attorneys are passed up for promotions and salary increases simply because they don’t ask for them.  In this workshop, we will cover how to ask for more - a promotion, salary increase, or higher offer.  We also will discuss gender differences, pay gaps, and how to combat them including how to remove limiting beliefs.  You will walk away with new tools, strategies, and a heightened sense of worth so you can start asking for more!  Don’t miss this workshop which will help you learn how to raise and discuss your salary and promotion potential with others, particularly as the end of the year review and evaluation period begins.

The discussion will be led by Lourdes Olvera-Marshall, an NYU-certified Executive Coach specializing in career development, leadership, diversity, and cross-cultural topics and an adjunct instructor at NYU School of Professional Studies, where she teaches How to Gain Influence in the Workplace, Networking with Confidence and Power, and Leading with Diversity & Inclusion.  Ms. Olvera-Marshall is also Manager of Diversity & Inclusion at Fried Frank.

SABA-DC's Book Club Presents: An Evening with South Asian Actor and Author Maulik Pancholy

SABA-DC is excited to have Maulik Pancholy - known for his roles in various shows including 30 Rock, Weeds, Whitney, and Sanjay and Craig - join us on November 5th to discuss his novel.  His debut novel, “The Best at It” is about a gay South Asian American boy coming into his own.  The book addresses various important issues affecting diverse youth, particularly as they navigate being first generation Americans, such as: bullying, fear of rejection, relationships with family members, friendship, anxiety, and mental health.

Following a welcome reception, a Q&A with Maulik will be led by Cohen Milstein partner Kalpana Kotagal, the civil rights and employment lawyer who co-wrote the inclusion rider - a contractual provision designed to strengthen diversity and hiring practices in Hollywood - that Frances McDormand spoke about in her 2018 Oscars acceptance speech.  Q&A from the audience regarding the book will follow.

Attendees are encouraged to read Maulik’s book before the event, which can be purchased online and in bookstores starting October 8!  This event is co-sponsored by APABA-DC.
