Fireside Chat with Nury Turkel, Commissioner to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) (May 18, 6:00 p.m. ET)

APABA-DC invites you to a virtual fireside chat with Nury Turkel, a Commissioner to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and widely respected human rights advocate and lawyer. Named as one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in the World in September 2020, Commissioner Turkel was appointed to the USCIRF in May 2020 by the U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). He is the first U.S.-educated Uyghur lawyer and the first Uyghur American to be appointed to a political position in the United States.  In addition to his law practice in regulatory compliance, federal investigations and enforcement, immigration, and other areas, Commissioner Turkel has served as a tireless human rights advocate for over two decades, in particular in his role as the Chairman of the Board for the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) and in his continued representation of Uyghur refugees in their effort to obtain asylum in the United States. Many of his recommendations have also been incorporated into U.S. laws and pending bills relating to Uyghurs and China in Congress, including the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-145).
