COVID-19, Courts, and Access to Justice

Please help with an important national study on the impact of COVID-19 on the judicial system. The COVID-19 pandemic required federal and state courts to quickly change their operations and procedures. Researchers at the University of Illinois and the National Center for State Courts are conducting a national survey to determine which changes worked well-and should be kept-and which didn't, and how changes impacted individual cases and access to justice. The results of the study will help identify necessary reforms and plan for future emergencies.

Please answer a 15-minute survey to report on your own experiences with the courts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please also forward the survey to associates and (where appropriate) to clients.

Access survey at this link: https://www.familylawprogram.com/covidcourts-shareyourexperience

Questions about the study? Contact Professor Robin Fretwell Wilson (wils@uillinois.edu) or Professor Jason Mazzone (mazzonej@illinois.edu). Thank you in advance.

    Vanita Gupta

The U.S. Senate confirmed Vanita Gupta as associate attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Wednesday. With her confirmation, Gupta will be the first woman of color to be associate attorney general, the No. 3 position at the DOJ.

Gupta is an experienced leader and litigator who has devoted her entire career to civil rights work. Most recently, from October 15, 2014, to January 20, 2017, she served as Acting Assistant Attorney General and Head of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. Prior to joining the Justice Department, Gupta served as Deputy Legal Director and the Director of the Center for Justice at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). At the ACLU, she secured a landmark settlement on behalf of immigrant children from around the world detained in a privately-run prison in Texas that ultimately led to the end of “family detention” at the facility. In addition, Gupta created and led the organization’s Smart Justice Campaign aimed at ending mass incarceration while keeping communities safe.

Gupta began her legal career as an attorney at the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, where she successfully led the effort to overturn the wrongful drug convictions of 38 individuals in Tulia, Texas, who were ultimately pardoned by Governor Rick Perry. She then helped negotiate a $6 million settlement on behalf of her clients. She also consulted with European civil society organizations working to advance the rights of the Roma.

Gupta graduated magna cum laude from Yale University and received her law degree from New York University School of Law, where she later taught a civil rights litigation clinic for several years.

SABA-DC congratulates Gupta on her historic confirmation.

    Building South Asian Political Power

Please join New York University School of Law’s South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA) for a lunch-and-learn with Neil Makhija about building South Asian political power in a climate of unprecedented repression, racism and xenophobia. The son of Indian immigrants who made Pennsylvania home, Neil brings a wealth of experience in politics, voting rights, and civic engagement.

Neil will reflect on his experience running for office in 2016 as the Democratic nominee for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from the 122nd House District. During his candidacy, he won the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court case, In Re: Makhija (2016), which protected the rights of students and recent graduates to run for office in their home state under the Pennsylvania Constitution.

Neil will also turn attention to his work with the Indian American IMPACT Fund, which seeks to build Indian American representation in shaping public policy from state capitols to Congress. Undergirding IMPACT’s philosophy is a belief that it is more critical than ever for South Asians to build solidarity with communities of color to wield political power. Neil will discuss recent enfranchisement efforts in the 2020 general election and Georgia run-off, candidate recruitment and training, and Indian American value-based funding.

Tuesday, April 6 11-12pm ET  RSVP here | Zoom link
