    The Appellate Project - Pre and Post Argument events (Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College)

    Please join us as we take a closer look at an appellate case with significant impact for communities of color.

    We’ll be following the oral argument of Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard College before the First Circuit and invite all law students to attend our pre-and post-argument events.

    Preview event (Sept. 14, 12:30 – 1:30pm EST): Debo Adegbile and Ishan Bhabha will provide an overview of the case, including its background, the current legal landscape, and what to expect at oral argument. Debo serves as counsel for Harvard, while Ishan represents as amici a group of universities.

    Oral argument before the First Circuit (Sept. 16, 9:30am EST): Watch it live with us.

    Post-argument discussion (Sept. 17, 12:30-1:30 pm EST): Brittany Amadi and Jin Hee Lee unpack the First Circuit argument and explain what it's like to prepare for this type of appellate matter. Brittany serves as counsel for Harvard, while Jin represents as amici a group of diverse Harvard students and alumni/ae.

    Coming on October 1, 2020, APAICS will hold a free and widely attended virtual CELEBRATION to honor individuals and organizations for their contributions to the AAPI community. CELEBRATION will be held in place of our 26th Annual APAICS Awards Gala and will include remarks by members of Congress, community leaders, and include performances and celebrity appearances. Sponsors of CELEBRATION will be showcased as partners in APAICS’ efforts to support AAPI leadership. High level sponsors have the opportunity to provide key remarks during the event.

    Awardees, special guests, and music performers will be announced weekly.

    So much is changing and remains uncertain. The Resiliency Circle allows for folks in the legal community to gather, get centered, and practice techniques to support ourselves and others around us. We will be doing weekly sessions with resiliency tools, mindfulness exercises, guided meditation, emotional intelligence, and sharing other frameworks and guidelines to help us through the course of this ever-changing year.

    Weekly sessions begin 12pm EST, and start on September 2, and continue on September 9, September 16, September 23, and September 30.

    We are asking for a suggested donation of $15. All proceeds go to the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP). A/PI DVRP is a non-profit organization in Washington, D.C. that aims to address, prevent, and end domestic violence and sex assault in A/Pi communities, while empowering survivors to rebuild ther lives after abuse. DVRP has seen a 77 % increase in hotline cases since the start of pandemic, and currently has 87 open cases with a lean staff of 6.

    Join AAPI Progressive Action on Wednesday, July 29 at 7pm ET / 4pm PT for a 1 hour discussion with former high-level appointees on different presidential administration roles and navigating appointment processes.

    Speakers will share their experiences and insights from past democratic administrations. The event will also feature special greetings from former Congressman Mike Honda and former Obama Appointee Seema Nanda.

    Please join WiseUp Texas for its first Civics and Chai webinar on July 15, 2020 from 8pm-9:30pm EST. We will speak with a panel of South Asian community leaders across the U.S. about what it means to be a good ally and how our communities can understand this unique moment in history. We will highlight responses from the SA community that have been successful at building a movement and starting a much-needed dialogue within our communities. 

    Shaya Karo (Coro Northern California) will be moderating the event and she will be joined by Amina Ishaq (An-Nisa Hope Center), Maryam Ali (South Asians for Black Lives Matter), and Mahnoor Hussain (South Asian Americans Leading Together).

    An Open Discussion on Reasons for this Lack of Diversity and An Examination of Viable Solutions

    This program is presented by the Women’s Bar Association and the Greater Washington Area Chapter, Women Lawyers Division, National Bar Association (GWAC).

    Our esteemed panelists will share how they overcame discriminatory obstacles in the legal profession to attain their current positions. They will also discuss what actions can be taken to improve the number of Black women in leadership roles.
     
    According to the National Association for Law Placement, as of January 2019, women of color accounted for 3.19% of partners at major U.S. law firms, with 1.38% Asian, 0.77% Hispanic, and 0.68% African-American. In 2018, white women accounted for 23% of general counsels at Fortune 500 companies. By contrast, women of color accounted for 6% of general counsels at Fortune 500 companies, with 1.8% Asian, 1% Hispanic, and 3.2% African-American (statistics from Minority Corporate Counsel Association).
