SABA-DC 2025 Board of Directors Elections

Elections for our 2025 leadership are underway! If you are interested in running for a position on the 2025 SABA-DC Board of Directors, please submit a statement of purpose no longer than 500 words to sabadcelections@gmail.com

***If you are running but have not previously served on the SABA-DC Board of Directors and would like to speak with someone currently on the Board, please email sabadcelections@gmail.com***

The statement must indicate the position you are running for, should describe your vision of SABA-DC for the upcoming year, and should include your pertinent qualifications.  

Candidates for the SABA-DC Board of Directors must be current dues-paying attorney members of SABA-DC who are in good standing.

Candidates may submit statements through 11:59 PM EST on Wednesday, November 13, 2024.

The candidates' statements will be posted on the SABA-DC website.  

A general election of the SABA-DC membership will be held by electronic vote. The election period will begin on Monday, November 18, 2024 and end at 11:59 PM EST on Monday, December 9, 2024. Please note that voting is restricted to current attorney members of SABA-DC. 

The 2025 Board of Directors will be announced no later than Tuesday, December 10, 2024. The members of the 2025 Board of Directors will be sworn in during the week of December 9, 2024, and take office on January 1, 2025.

Available Positions:

President-Elect

The President-Elect shall have those powers of the president, in the absence of the president, as the president so delegates. In circumstances in which the president resigns, or otherwise is unable to complete his/her term, the President-Elect shall be vested with the full powers of the president for the remainder of the president’s term. The President-Elect shall be the President of the Association for the term following his or her term as President-Elect.

Vice President of Programming

The Vice-President of Programming shall be responsible for all matters pertaining to Programming, periodically report to the President and the Board on the activities and initiatives relating to Programming, and perform such other duties as the President or the Board may from time to time direct. Programming includes all activities related planning and calendaring events sponsored, co-sponsored, hosted, and co-hosted by the Association for the benefit of the Association’s membership and consistent with the Association’s mission statement. The members of the programming committee will report to the Vice-President of Programming.

Vice President of Communications

The Vice-President of Communications shall be responsible for all matters pertaining to Communications, periodically report to the President and the Board on the activities and initiatives relating to Communications and Membership, and perform such other duties as the President or the Board may from time to time direct. Communications include all activities related to the marketing of the Association including without limitation advertising to the Association’s Membership and maintaining the Association’s website and social media accounts. The members of the communications committee will report to the Vice-President of Communications.

Vice President of Membership  

The Vice-President of Membership shall be responsible for all matters pertaining to the Membership, periodically report to the President and the Board on the activities and initiatives relating to Membership, and perform such other duties as the President or the Board may from time to time direct. Membership includes all activities related to recruitment and retention of members and the establishment of committees to foster connection among similarly situated Association members and facilitating the Association’s mentorship program. Members of the membership committee will report to the Vice-President of Membership. 

Vice President of Gala  

The Vice-President of Gala shall be responsible for all matters pertaining to the Association’s Annual Gala, periodically reporting to the President and the Board on the activities and initiatives relating to Gala planning, costs, and fundraising efforts, and perform such other duties as the President or the Board may from time to time direct. Members of the gala committee will report to the Vice-President of Gala. This position may be occupied by two individuals serving concurrently.  

***Candidates for the positions of President-Elect, Vice President of Programming, and Vice President of Membership must have served for one year on the Board of SABA-DC as a Director, Secretary, or Treasurer, or on the board of another chapter of the South Asian Bar Association of North America, to be eligible to run.***

Treasurer

The Treasurer shall be responsible for the safeguarding of all funds received by the Association and for their proper disbursement in accordance with budget parameters.  Such funds shall be kept on deposit in financial institutions or invested in a manner approved by the Board. Checks are to be signed by the Treasurer and or as directed by the Board. The Treasurer shall cause a quarterly financial report to be made to the Board. The Treasurer shall be responsible for the preparation and filing of financial regulatory reports and timely notification to the Board of reporting obligations.

Secretary

The Secretary shall keep all non-financial records, carry on correspondence, and cause to be prepared notices, agendas, and the minutes of the meetings of the Board and the general membership. The Secretary will mail the minutes of meetings of the Board to every Board member and Officer prior to the following meeting.

General Directors (9 positions)

The directors shall serve on the Communications committee, the Membership committee, or the Gala committee, under the direction of the respective Vice Presidents leading those committees, to carry out the functions of those respective committees.  General Directors shall also be responsible for assisting with and facilitating programming, under the direction of the Vice President of Programming.

The following positions are not part of the election process, but members interested in serving on a committee are encouraged to submit their statement of interest for consideration by the Board. SABA-DC committees are not part of the Board of Directors, but work under the direction of the Board to accomplish the committee's stated objectives.

BOARD-APPOINTED ADVISORY COMMITTEE POSITIONS

Endorsements Committee (3 Positions Available)

The Endorsements Committee is responsible for reviewing all requests for the endorsement of SABA-DC submitted by candidates for the judiciary, bar leadership, and/or senior government positions.  Following its review, the Endorsements will make recommendations to the Board as to which candidates warrant the support of SABA-DC.  Membership on the Endorsements Committee is by appointment of the Board of Directors.  If interested in serving in 2025, please send your statement of interest to sabadcelections@gmail.com

Membership Committee (3 Positions Available)

The Membership Committee is responsible for working with the Board to coordinate member recruitment initiatives and related activities.  Membership on the Membership Committee is by appointment of the Board of Directors.  If interested in serving in 2025, please send your statement of interest to sabadcelections@gmail.com

Public Interest Committee (3 Positions Available)

The Public Interest Committee is responsible for developing programs and activities targeted at pro bono opportunities and the area of public interest law.  Membership on the Public Interest Committee is by appointment of the Board of Directors.  If interested in serving in 2025, please send your statement of interest to sabadcelections@gmail.com

Fundraising Committee (3 Positions Available)

The Fundraising Committee is responsible for coordinating SABA-DC fundraising and sponsorship efforts.  Membership on the Fundraising Committee is by appointment of the Board of Directors.  If interested in serving in 2025, please send your statement of interest to sabadcelections@gmail.com
