LAW CLERKS - 

The Office of Senator Chris Coons is hiring full-time law clerks for Winter/Spring 2022 for the Senator’s Judiciary Committee staff.  Law clerks will assist the Senator’s counsels in all aspects of the Senator’s Judiciary responsibilities, including researching and writing memos, preparing the Senator for hearings, and participating in meetings with stakeholders and constituents as appropriate.  The position is unpaid.  Topics of work may include privacy/technology, criminal justice, immigration, voting rights, intellectual property, nominations, and all other topics within the committee’s jurisdiction. Candidates should have completed at least one year of law school, have strong legal research abilities and written and oral communication skills, and be capable of managing themselves and taking initiative. The position will be in-person in the Washington, DC office.  We will begin reviewing applications on October 22, 2021.  We are committed to creating an inclusive environment and proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Please e-mail a cover letter and resume to senate_employment@saa.senate.gov indicating the job referral number in the subject line. The cover letter should specify dates of availability.

VIRTUAL HEALTH, EDUCATION, LABOR, PENSIONS, DISABILITY, AND OVERSIGHT INTERNS/LAW CLERKS - 

The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP), Office of the Chair, seeks virtual interns and law clerks for spring 2022. The positions offer undergraduate, graduate, recent graduates, medical students, law students, and recently graduated law students the virtual opportunity to gain substantive experience in a Senate office while participating directly in the legislative process. Intern and law clerk responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assisting Committee staff in performing office duties, conducting research, analyzing legislation, drafting memorandums, and assisting in hearing preparation. Interns and law clerks play a key role in the office and will work closely with senior policy advisors and counsels. 

HELP Committee:  The HELP Committee works on a wide range of issues in the areas of health, education, labor, disability, pensions, and oversight. Please specify within your application which office or offices you would prefer to work in.

Qualifications:  Applicants should have (i) an interest in public policy and (ii) a desire to learn.  They also must have good attention to detail, work well under pressure, be self-motivated, and possess excellent written and oral communication skills. 

Openings: 

Health Policy Intern/Law Clerk: interest and experience in health-related matters, including but not limited to: the Affordable Care Act, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children’s health, the Food and Drug Administration, health equity/disparities, health information technology, health workforce, Medicare/Medicaid, mental health, the National Institutes of Health, public health and preparedness, and/or women’s health.

Education Policy Intern/Law Clerk: interest in education-related policy, including: early childhood, k-12, postsecondary, workforce, and civil rights issues. Interest or experience teaching or working with students encouraged.

Labor Policy Intern/Law Clerk: interest or experience in issues facing workers, including workers’ rights, minimum wage and overtime, union rights and collective bargaining, inequality, occupational safety and health, international labor rights, family and medical leave, equal pay, and equal employment opportunity and civil rights.

Pensions Intern/Law Clerk: interest in retirement policy. The Pensions team covers a wide range of topics from multiemployer defined benefit pension plans to 401(k)s to DOL’s conflicts of interest rule to coverage and leakage policies, among many other issues.  Please note relevant classes taken, if any, in your cover letter.

Oversight Law Clerk: clerkship open to current law students or recent law school graduates who are interested in health, education, and labor law and policies that strive to protect consumers, workers, and the public. Previous experience in government is not required but candidates should have a general understanding of the legislative process.

Disability Policy Intern/Law Clerk: interest in issues and policy as it relates to individuals with disabilities that may include: equitable educational opportunities, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, seclusion and restraint, alternate assessment, equitable employment opportunities, AbilityOne, efforts to phase out subminimum wage, health care broadly, home and community based services, health disparities, Medicaid, and disability rights.

SPRING 2022 INTERNSHIP - 

The Democratic Staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee seeks applicants for a Spring 2022 internship. Interns will work with staff teams to provide research, track hearings and legislation, draft memos, and take notes at high-level meetings. Successful applicants will have excellent research and writing skills, as well as academic or professional experience in international relations or a similar field. Hill experience and NJ ties are both a plus. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates are all eligible to apply. Law students may apply for a legal internship to work with the SFRC legal team. Normal work hours are 9am-6pm Eastern Time, Monday-Friday, and applicants must commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week during those hours. Those with full-time availability are strongly encouraged to apply. At this time, SFRC has not yet determined whether in-person internship opportunities will be available during the fall session. In your application, you may indicate your availability and preference for remote and in-person internships. Please note that an in-person internship will require you to be located in the Washington, D.C. area.
