KPMG is currently seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join our Office of General Counsel (OGC) organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel to the Tax and Advisory Practices and their respective Risk Management groups to resolve potential client disputes, including investigating the facts, developing negotiation strategies and tactics, addressing conflict of interest concerns and negotiating and drafting settlement documentation for the Tax Practice, this could also include matters related to client submissions to federal and state taxing authorities where a potential error has been made with respect to a client’s tax return
  • Provide counsel to leadership and personnel of the Tax and Advisory Practices and their respective Risk Management groups with respect to Firm strategic initiatives, including development of new services, new staffing models and new business processes
  • Advise on regulatory developments impacting the Tax and Advisory practices
  • Provide counsel on matters related to access to Firm and client documents by third parties, including access to KPMG work papers and disclosure of client data to third parties
  • Provide counsel on various client engagement-related matters, including client continuance, non-acceptance and termination decisions and third-party reliance on KPMG client deliverables
  • Supervise and work collaboratively with outside counsel and other members of OGC to deliver the highest quality legal representation to the Firm and its leaders; assist in developing financial projections for supervised matters
  • This role reports to the Deputy General Counsel of OGC’s Practice Advisory Group and will require periodic consultation with the General Counsel

Qualifications:

  • Minimum seven years of experience: (1) in a litigation position within a Division of Enforcement of either the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service or similar regulatory or law enforcement agency handling tax litigation matters OR (2) representing tax clients in complex tax civil and regulatory matters in a well-regarded law firm(s) or providing similar tax advice an in-house legal department; experience in accounting or other highly regulated industry a plus
  • JD or LLM from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the U.S., including in the state in which his/her office is located
  • Experience with, exposure to, or strong interest in learning about legal issues impacting the provision of advisory and/or consulting services
  • Ability to manage multiple matters and projects simultaneously and meet deadlines with consistently high-quality deliverables and results, strategic thinking in sensitive and complex situations and the highest ethical standards, integrity, authenticity, credibility and character
  • Strong analytical, writing, interpersonal, communication, client counseling and oral advocacy skills
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills, including building strong business partnerships and working within cross-functional teams; client-service orientation with the ability to create effective working relationships cross-functionally, including interfacing with internal and external stakeholders on legal and business matters
