Council on American-Islamic Relations - Legal Counsel
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as legal counsel for the organization, including as corporate counsel and legal director of its civil rights department. This position reports to the executive director.
Position Summary:
The Legal Counsel will handle a wide variety of legal responsibilities and become an integral part of CAIR's management team. The position will serve as corporate counsel for nonprofit reporting, corporate governance and general corporate matters. As legal director, legal counsel directs CAIR's staff attorneys to oversee the effective resolution of the thousands of civil rights cases CAIR receives from American Muslims each year.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate experience with one or more of the following:
- Negotiating and drafting contracts, providing legal advice on a wide variety of matters
- Performing in-house counsel functions that may include the function of corporate secretary
- Managing outside counsel
- Personnel recruitment, hiring and retention
- Benefits management
- Complex civil litigation, including extensive trial work
- Supervising multiple attorneys and support staff
- Civil rights advocacy and litigation on major constitutional issues, including but not limited to national security and discrimination
- Client counseling and alternative dispute resolution
- Working with high-level experts to direct litigation and policy on issues that threaten the rule of law and constitutional safeguards
- Other tasks related to the operation of a nonprofit civil rights advocacy organization
Other required qualifications:
- A minimum of five years of legal experience required
- Membership in the District of Columbia Bar required
- Effective writing and communication skills
- A high degree of responsibility and dedication
- The ability to establish positive working relationships with colleagues
- Aptitude to thrive in a fast paced environment with proficiency to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
