About the Office: The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania (USAO) is an energetic and collegial office which represents the United States in all criminal prosecution and civil and appellate litigation in the Western District of Pennsylvania. The Western District of Pennsylvania consists of 25 counties in the western part of the state; its main office is in Pittsburgh, with staffed branch offices in Erie and Johnstown. Job Description: The United States Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is seeking an attorney for its Criminal Division. This AUSA will have responsibility to prosecute priority federal crimes, including firearms offenses, armed robberies, drug trafficking, other crimes of violence, financial crimes and fraud. The AUSA will also be tasked with strategic outreach and non-case responsibilities throughout the District as part of the effort to improve crime prevention, offender reentry and to reduce opioid abuse and heroin/prescription pill overdoses.
All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
Qualifications:
Required qualifications: Applicants must have a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or District of Columbia, and have at least three years of post-J.D. experience. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction). Ideal qualifications include at least five to nine years of post J.D. litigation experience.
Preferred qualifications: At least seven years of experience handling a variety of complex criminal matters is beneficial, first‑chair federal trial experience, strong academics, outstanding organizational skills, superior legal writing and research ability, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility and public service.
Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case. Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment. Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment while balancing a high case load. Excellent computer literacy skills are also necessary.
United States citizenship is required.
Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. § 545 for district-specific information.
Salary: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $53,593 – $141,847 which includes 16.68% locality pay.
Travel: Occasional travel within and outside the district will be required.
