DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Director of the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP). Together, the Director and Deputy Director of OCP oversee the management and operation of the Office. OCP protects the District’s consumers by bringing cases against businesses that take advantage of District residents, educating consumers in the District through outreach events and materials on how best to protect themselves, and receiving and investigating complaints from consumers in the District regarding potential violations of District consumer laws by businesses. OCP both investigates and brings enforcement actions of high priority to local residents and participates in national and multistate actions. The Deputy Director supervises a staff that includes five Assistant Attorneys General, a paralegal and three investigators. OCP also regularly proposes legislative solutions to better protect District residents and engages frequent public speaking and consumer education efforts.
QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have significant experience supervising legal work, including the day-to-day activities of attorneys and support staff. In addition, the candidate should have at least 9 years of civil litigation experience in the consumer protection arena; strong organizational skills and excellent oral and writing skills; and a creative orientation toward the law and bring innovative thinking to the ways in which OAG can expand its work to meet the needs of District residents. Demonstrated commitment to the District is a plus.
ELIGIBILITY: The successful candidate must have a law degree and be an active member in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction. If not a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the candidate must be sworn into the District of Columbia Bar within 360 days of his/her initial appointment with the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.
