Job Description: Attorneys in FIRS handle a wide range of complex and highly sensitive matters involving counterintelligence, technology, law, and policy. Specifically, FIRS attorneys provide advice and guidance to DOJ leadership, including the Assistant Attorney General for National Security, the Intelligence Community, and other Executive Branch agencies on national security concerns arising from foreign acquisitions of or investment in U.S. businesses as well as concerns arising from foreign participation in the domestic telecommunications infrastructure. Such guidance involves written recommendations and may also include the drafting and negotiation of national security agreements to mitigate national security risks arising from transactions and, in rare circumstances, the drafting of recommendations by CFIUS to the President of the United States. In addition to the review of matters before CFIUS, FIRS attorneys also review FCC license applications to determine whether a proposed communications provider that is under foreign ownership, control, and/or influence poses such a risk to law enforcement or national security that it must either be mitigated through imposition of mitigating measures or opposed altogether. When DOJ has adopted mitigating measures, such as national security agreements, between DOJ and foreign-owned businesses, FIRS attorneys are also responsible for supervising the subsequent compliance with these agreements and, when necessary, the enforcement of those compliance agreements. An attorney selected under this announcement may be required to work under the supervision of the Deputy Chief for Compliance and Enforcement, the Deputy Chief for Foreign Investment, or the Deputy Chief for Telecom at any point during the attorney’s tenure. FIRS’s work is often done in coordination with other DOJ components, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of Legal Counsel, and the Office of Legal Policy, as well as other departments and agencies, such as the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Department of the Treasury, Department of Commerce, Department of State, and the Executive Office of the President.

Investigative Counsel (Attorney Advisor)

Job Description: 

Investigative Counsel within O&R are experienced attorneys who have previously served as civil litigators, criminal litigators (prosecution and defense), appellate attorneys, and agency counsel. Investigative Counsel conduct a broad range of investigations and reviews, including misconduct investigations of senior-level Department employees, examinations of high-profile DOJ law enforcement operations, investigations of whistleblower retaliation allegations involving FBI employees and the employees of DOJ contractors, and reviews of DOJ's use of national security authorities. 
 
The day-to-day work of Investigative Counsel consists of designing investigative plans; determining what Department documents and information to obtain; reviewing and analyzing documents and other data; conducting interviews of subjects and witnesses; consulting with prosecutors when criminal allegations arise; analyzing evidence, laws, regulations, and Department policies; and drafting reports and recommendations that promote individual accountability of DOJ employees and tangible improvements in DOJ operations. Investigative Counsel lead multi-disciplinary teams in investigations and reviews that blend the skills of attorneys, special agents, program analysts, and paralegals. These teams work independently with supervisory support, and the work is stimulating, varied, and performed collaboratively, resulting in a positive work environment and significant employee satisfaction and engagement.

Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal Division)

Job Description: 

The district is soliciting applications for a Criminal Division Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) position in our Charlottesville branch office. The applicant will join other criminal AUSAs who handle a variety of litigation within the Criminal Division. The Criminal Division investigates and prosecutes federal cases arising from a wide array of criminal activity. An AUSA engaged in this challenging work spends substantial time developing cases with investigators, researching and writing, and preparing for trials, sentencings, and other hearings.

 Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division are responsible for the investigation and prosecution of cases that include drug crimes; violent crimes; firearms offenses; child exploitation crimes; human trafficking; organized crime; terrorism; white collar crime, including wire and mail fraud, healthcare fraud, and mortgage fraud; criminal immigration matters; and general crimes.   The qualified applicant would be expected to (a) assist federal law enforcement agents in structuring and implementing criminal investigative plans and strategies; (b) actively participate in grand jury proceedings, including the presentation of witnesses before the grand jury; and (c) litigate cases of moderate to high complexity from start to finish with limited supervision.

All initial attorney appointments in the Department of Justice are made on a time-limited (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

Description: The Multicultural Center (MC) at NVFS provides multicultural mental health, case management and legal services that address the needs of low-income, English-limited immigrants and refugees for whom existing services are inaccessible due to language and cultural barriers. Clients include individuals from all cultural and ethnic groups whose mental health and socio-economic stability is compromised as a result of trauma, poverty, chronic stress, and other tremendous challenges posed by the process of cultural adjustment. Trauma informed services are provided by bilingual, bicultural counselors, therapists, case managers and attorneys/ accredited representatives.

The Managing Immigration Attorney functions as the immigration legal expert on the Multicultural Center Management Team. This role is responsible for the daily operations of the Immigration Legal Services program including planning, organization, implementation, documentation and coordination of legal services delivery. The Managing Immigration Attorney exercises independent judgment and decision-making authority, including around policies, procedures, and staff supervision. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all ethical and professional rules, as well as providing quality control for the program as a whole. INVESTIGATIVE COUNSEL - Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) is seeking experienced candidates for two Counsel positions on his Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations staff.
