Legislative Attorney (Labor and Employment Law)

Salary: $103,690 to $134,798 per year

The Congressional Research Service (CRS), American Law Division (ALD), seeks a Legislative Attorney to analyze legal questions that emerge from the work of Congress related to labor and employment law in particular and American public law generally.  This is a non-litigating position emphasizing qualifications and interest in legal research and writing in a public service legislative context.

The position’s primary focus is the broad area of labor and employment law. However, given ALD’s relatively small staff and the breadth of issues ALD covers for Congress, candidates must also be capable of working in a number of different areas of the law and have the intellectual curiosity to seek out and maintain a broad portfolio of legal issues. Thus, applicants should also have knowledge of constitutional and administrative law and statutory interpretation.

Legislative Attorney duties include:

Prepares probing and innovative written legal analyses, arguments, briefs, or other analytical documents that relate complex variables within the attorney's specialized field of law to the development, interpretation, or implementation of important public policies.

Provides congressional staff with consultations and oral briefings that clarify legal questions, identify and discuss legal options, and inform congressional staff of CRS informational and analytical capabilities within the scope of the attorney's subject areas.

Prepares authoritative descriptive and background reports, memoranda, bill digests, surveys of laws, comparisons of laws and bills, and other types of written responses for congressional committees, Members, and staff that are characterized by substantial breadth and depth and that cover all pertinent factors and relationships.

About the Office: 

The Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice is seeking an experienced attorney to be the Deputy Chief of the Program Management and Training Unit (PMTU) of the Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section.

PMTU is responsible for several nationwide law enforcement initiatives, working groups, and programs, including the transfer of forfeited funds to victims of crime and the Equitable Sharing Program. Each of these programs involves the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars to victims, as well as state and local law enforcement, and requires consistent nationwide policies and oversight to ensure that forfeited proceeds are distributed in accordance with the laws, regulations, and policies that govern them. PMTU is also responsible for the oversight and nationwide training of all federal prosecutors, agents, analysts, and support staff on asset forfeiture, money laundering, and financial investigations, which includes the development of curricula, training tools, and educational materials. In addition, PMTU manages and oversees asset forfeiture and money laundering communications, including the development and publication of all asset forfeiture and money laundering publications.

  About the Office: The Civil Rights Division (Division) of the Department of Justice, created by the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, works to uphold the civil and constitutional rights of all Americans, particularly some of the most vulnerable members of our society. The Division enforces federal statutes prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity), disability, religion, familial status, national origin, and citizenship status.
  
  The Appellate Section (APP or Section) also monitors federal civil rights cases in which the United States is not a party. The Section also works with the Solicitor General's Office in developing the government's position in Supreme Court cases involving civil rights issues. JOB SUMMARY

The United States District Court for the District of Columbia is seeking applicants for a criminal law clerk position which will serve the Court’s three Magistrate Judges, on a rotating basis. The incumbent will be responsible for management of the criminal duty Magistrate Judge’s criminal caseload. This will include case management and scheduling, substantively reviewing filings and other processes, research and writing on a range of criminal law issues, preparing bench memoranda, and drafting orders, opinions and reports and recommendations on matters pending before the Magistrate Judges. The incumbent will work closely with all of the Court’s Magistrate Judges and assist in preparing them for their daily criminal calendar. The initial appointment is for more than one year and one day, but may be renewed at the discretion of the Court.

Seeking Legislative Counsel for House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship seeks a hard-working lawyer with significant experience in immigration and nationality law to serve as legislative counsel.  

Responsibilities include:  serving as a resource for Democratic Members of the Judiciary Committee on matters involving immigration law and policy; drafting legislation; coordinating hearings and witnesses; preparing Members for hearings and markups; drafting statements, memos, and briefing materials; and providing guidance to other offices within the Democratic Caucus on immigration-related matters.

A strong background in immigration law and policy is required. Exceptional writing skills, sound political judgment, and the ability to work closely and collaboratively with other congressional offices and advocacy organizations are essential.  The ideal candidate will have Capitol Hill experience and a minimum of five years of experience in immigration law.
