    Job Description: 

    The position is located in the Criminal Division of the Sacramento Office and the Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) will be responsible for   handling a variety of criminal cases with an emphasis on narcotics and violent crime.


    This is an anticipated vacancy.


    This is a permanent position; however, all initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.


    Following appointment, Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which they are appointed.  See 28 U.S.C. § 545 for district-specific information.

    Qualifications: 

    Required Qualifications:  Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or the District of Columbia, and have at least one year of post-J.D. experience.  Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction).   Ideal qualifications include at least 3-5 years of post-J.D. litigation experience.


    Preferred Qualifications:  Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case.  Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment.  Applicants must possess excellent communication and courtroom skills and exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff and client agencies.  Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment.


    Preferred Qualifications:  Applicants will be expected to do their own legal research and writing and will be substantially self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings.  Applicants must also demonstrate excellent computer literacy skills to include experience with automated research on the Internet, electronic court filing, and electronic e-mail and word processing systems.


    Preferred Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have some experience working with multi-agency task forces; will have substantial experience and familiarity with federal grand jury practice; will have experience with the use of a multitude of investigatory techniques, including electronic surveillance, tracking devices, search warrants, telephone toll record analysis and asset seizure and forfeiture; and will demonstrate the ability to handle complex cases from the initial investigative stage through trial.  Proficiency in the Spanish language is a plus.


    Security Requirements:  Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication.  This includes fingerprint, tax and credit checks, and drug testing.  In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.


    Salary: Assistant United States Attorneys’ pay is administratively determined, based in part on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The current recruiting range of pay is $63,525 to $149,056 including 22.61% locality pay for Sacramento.


    Travel: The position is based in Sacramento. Travel will occasionally be required.

    About the Office: The Office of Immigration Litigation, District Court Section (OIL-DCS) handles both affirmative and defensive litigation in federal district courts, as well as the appeals which arise from those cases.  The Section is responsible for litigation in all 94 districts as well as 12 federal circuit courts of appeals, and works closely with United States Attorneys' offices on immigration-related cases.  Further, OIL-DCS provides support and counsel to all federal agencies involved in the admission, regulation, and removal of aliens under our immigration and nationality statutes, as well as related areas of border enforcement, labor and employment, and national security.  The Office currently has approximately 70 attorneys and 20 support staff, led by a Director, a Deputy Director, and six Assistant Directors. 

    The Civil Division, with more than 1,000 attorneys and 14 litigating components, represents the United States, its departments and agencies, Members of Congress, Cabinet officers and other Federal employees.

     Job Description:  OIL-DCS seeks several talented and highly-motivated litigators to join the Section.  OIL-DCS attorneys work on cutting-edge and complex litigation matters focusing on the defense of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).  Trial attorneys in the Section personally handle all phases of civil litigation, including case assessment and strategy determination, coordinating legal positions of federal agencies, conducting all aspects of discovery, writing and filing dispositive motions, conducting oral arguments and trials, handling appeals to the circuit courts, and conducting settlement negotiations.  Trial Attorneys also provide counsel to other federal agencies concerning litigation risk stemming from immigration policies and practices.  OIL-DCS attorneys are regularly asked to review proposed legislative, regulatory, and policy changes to federal immigration law and provide comments. 


    Qualifications: 

    Required Qualifications:  Applicants must be a graduate from a full course of study in a School of Law accredited by the American Bar Association and be a member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. 

     Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar (any jurisdiction), have at least one year of post-J.D. experience to qualify at the GS-12 level; have at least two years of post J.D. experience to qualify at the GS-13 level; have at least three years of post J.D. experience to qualify at the GS-14 level; and four years of post J.D. experience to qualify at the GS-15 level.  You must also be a U.S. citizen. 

     Applicants should possess superior oral and written communication skills, as well as strong character, judgment, and interpersonal skills; and have demonstrated the capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment. 


    Preferred Qualifications:  Experience with civil litigation in federal court, including a federal clerkship, is strongly encouraged. An ideal candidate will be familiar with the Federal Rules of Civil and Appellate Procedure and the Administrative Procedure Act. Experience with the Immigration and Nationality Act, while helpful, is not required. Candidates should enjoy learning complex regulatory schemes, be comfortable with taking on assignments in new areas of constitutional and federal administrative law, be able to skillfully brief issues of first impression, and eager to argue those issues on behalf of the United States in federal district and appellate courts in various jurisdictions around the United States.

    The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is an independent legal agency within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Attorneys in the Office of the General Counsel provide legal advice and services to the Secretary of Agriculture and all other officials and agencies of the Department with respect to all USDA programs and activities.  The primary purpose of the position is to provide professional legal services to major components of USDA and its agencies within the geographic area of the assigned office.

    This attorney position is located in a field office of the Office of the General Counsel, located in Little Rock, Arkansas which provides legal advice and counseling for USDA issues in the States of Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee.  The Little Rock Office is a branch office within the Central Region, headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri.  

    Pay Scale:
    This position starts at the GS-11 level however, the full performance level is a GS-14.  Listed below are the salary ranges for each grade level.



    DUTIES:


    As an Attorney you will be responsible for the following:

    • Conducting legal research and advising agency officials and OGC attorneys on complex legal questions, preparing pleadings, motions, briefs and other related documents, determining the nature of action along with the legal issues involved and the most effective course of action and the most advantageous legal strategies.
    • Serving as legal counsel to officials and agencies within the Department of Agriculture including: Farm Service Agency, Rural Development (Rural Housing Service, Rural Utilities Service, Rural Business Service), Food and Nutrition Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Risk Managment Agency, the Forest Service, and other USDA agencies within the states served by this office.
    • Advising USDA agency officials and other OGC attorneys on complex legal questions or factual issues and recommending final action on many matters regarding litigation.
    • Representing the Agency's interests in commercial law matters such as collection and servicing of residential, multi-family and farm loan porfolios (foreclosure, bankruptcy, third-party actions); and representing agency in real estate practice involving agency regulations and related issues.
    • Conducting research to ensure any advice is based on sound understanding of relevant facts and law, anticipating significant foreseeable consequences of advice and recommend actions to ensure that decisions made and actions taken are practical, effective, legally sound and supportable.
    • Conducting Litigation in conjunction with other attorneys in OGC and the Department of Justice to prepare pleadings for federal, state or administrative tribunals, preparing witnesses in preparation for trials or hearings, participating in prehearing conferences, mediation or negotiation, and preparing documents related to the relevant facts and law at issue.  Example of actions include: programmatic claims made in District Court proceeding de novo or record review; administrative actions before various administrative tribunals; and defense of personnel actions taken by the Agency.
    • Negotiating with highly skilled and knowledgeable opposing counsel while acting within the parameteres of delegated authority consistent with statutory authority and agency policy and objectives.
    • Reviewing agency reports, documents, and policy statements for legal sufficiency; conducting all legal research related to the above matters; and acting as legal advisor to the administrative officials of the Department.
    • Planning, organizing, and conducting independent activities required in furnishing the legal services assigned.
    • Reviewing and drafting documents related to a wide variety of real property issues involving all USDA agencies: e.g., the acquisition, purchase and disposal of real property, easement acquisition, review of title commitments/title insurance, boundary disputes, title claims, leasehold issues, securing and disposal of encumbered property.

    About the Office: The United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania (USAO) is an energetic and collegial office which represents the United States in all criminal prosecution and civil and appellate litigation in the Western District of Pennsylvania.  The Western District of Pennsylvania consists of 25 counties in the western part of the state; its main office is in Pittsburgh, with staffed branch offices in Erie and Johnstown.  The USAO strives to provide an inclusive, rewarding work environment for employees of all backgrounds.


    Job Description: The United States Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is seeking an attorney for its Criminal Division.  This AUSA will have responsibility to prosecute priority federal crimes, including firearms offenses, armed robberies, drug trafficking, other crimes of violence, financial crimes and fraud.  The AUSA will also be tasked with strategic outreach and non-case responsibilities throughout the District as part of the effort to improve crime prevention, offender reentry and to reduce opioid abuse and heroin/prescription pill overdoses.


    All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.


    Qualifications: 

    Required qualifications:  Applicants must have a J.D. degree, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of a State, territory, or District of Columbia, and have at least three years of post-J.D. experience.  Applicants must be active members in good standing of the bar (any jurisdiction).  Ideal qualifications include at least five to nine years of post J.D. litigation experience.


    Preferred qualifications:  At least seven years of experience handling a variety of complex criminal matters is beneficial, first‑chair federal trial experience, strong academics, outstanding organizational skills, superior legal writing and research ability, and a demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility and public service.

    Applicants must demonstrate a quick analytical ability and the facility to accurately and precisely articulate the critical issues in a case.   Applicants must demonstrate superior oral and writing skills as well as strong research and interpersonal skills, and good judgment.   Applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to function, with minimal guidance, in a highly demanding environment while balancing a high case load.  Excellent computer literacy skills are also necessary.

    United States citizenship is required.

    Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof.  See 28 U.S.C. § 545 for district-specific information.


    Salary: Assistant United States Attorneys' pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $53,593 – $141,847 which includes 16.68% locality pay.


    Travel: Occasional travel within and outside the district will be required.
