Kalyan Deshpande

We’re thrilled to spotlight Kalyan Deshpande on his appointment as Chief Judge of the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Judge Deshpande has been a member of SABA-DC for many years, and this is a proud moment for all of us.

Judge Deshpande, who has served on the Board since 2008 across roles including Lead Judge and Vice Chief Judge, now leads the Board responsible for critical patent reviews and appeals. His deep experience shaping precedential decision processes, advancing internal programs like LEAP, and stewarding the Board’s operations positions him to guide patent law adjudication with expertise, fairness, and a commitment to innovation. His leadership is a significant achievement for the IP community and an inspiring example of the impact of diverse legal talent at the highest levels of federal service.
