The Torts Branch is responsible for the defense of the United States and its employees in tort litigation seeking monetary judgments for damages resulting from negligent or wrongful acts. The Branch also prosecutes a significant number of affirmative tort claims to recover for damages to government property. Other responsibilities include participating in administrative claims procedures mandated by the Federal Tort Claims Act, and administering other federally-mandated compensation programs.

Trial attorneys in Office of Constitutional and Specialized Tort Litigation - Vaccine Litigation Staff - represent the interests of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in all cases filed in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims under the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act ("Vaccine Act"). The cases involve claims of injury as a result of the receipt of vaccines covered by the Act. The position offers a unique experience in public service and involves trial practice. The legal and medical issues at stake in each case vary. Trial attorneys independently manage heavy caseloads, and while streamlined procedures are utilized, many cases involve complex scientific issues of causation that require employment of experts in medical fields such as pediatrics, neurology, immunology and epidemiology. In cases in which petitioners are found entitled to compensation, the litigation often requires retention and management of experts to develop an appropriate life care plan for the injured party- to include medical treatment, remedial care, rehabilitation, calculation of lost earnings, actuarial projections and structured settlements.

Attorneys appear frequently before the Office of Special Masters in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, and also appear before the judges of the Court, as well as in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit when handling appeals. Responsibilities include factual and legal research, medical record review, brief writing, and working with expert witnesses to develop the defense of claims, as well as to address the life care needs of vaccine-injured petitioners. As the majority of cases are resolved through settlement, attorneys also engage regularly in settlement negotiations, including alternative dispute resolution, and drafting settlement memoranda and related documents. Due to a significant increase in cases recently filed under the Vaccine Act, the office is expanding to address the additional workload.

Wilkinson Barker Knauer, LLP, a Tier 1 communications and technology law firm with offices in Washington, D.C. and Denver, Colorado, seeks a senior associate, of counsel, or partner to join its growing privacy/data security and FTC/advertising/consumer protection teams in the Washington office. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience advising clients or working in federal or state government on consumer protection issues. Our practice is a unique hybrid of compliance/enforcement defense and policy advocacy; candidates should have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be as comfortable drafting a detailed legal brief as engaging in conversations with Capitol Hill and federal agency staff. WBK lawyers must be flexible and creative, adapting to provide the highest quality service to both Fortune 50 companies and tiny start-ups. We welcome candidates from either the private or public sector; WBK has substantial experience onboarding those leaving government service for private practice. WBK is a special place to practice law; we mean it when we say we are #NotJustAnotherLawFirm. With 65 attorneys, the firm offers clients the capabilities and expertise of a large firm combined with the personal style only a smaller firm can deliver. Each day, we work together for both the common good of the group and the common goal of building and maintaining a nationally recognized legal practice. We highly value collaboration, supporting each other personally and professionally using our individual talents and expertise. Every attorney is encouraged to be entrepreneurial and to contribute in their own way; there is no single model for success. We avoid silos, hierarchy, and bureaucracy, working as a team to deliver results. WBK has long been committed to community, inclusion, and service, with attorneys and staff devoting substantial time and energy to volunteerism, civic and community leadership, charitable giving, pro bono work, mentoring, service on nonprofit boards, teaching, and more. These activities are not just permitted but actively encouraged and supported at WBK.

To sustain and enhance these unique firm qualities, we seek candidates who have balanced excellence in law school and career achievements with a personal commitment to advance the legal profession and serve the broader community. WBK is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of gender, age, racial or ethnic background, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, or veteran status. The ideal candidate will also bring a strong work ethic, team-oriented ethos, and a healthy, perhaps even irreverent, sense of humor. We look forward to meeting you.

Hausfeld LLP is accepting applications for a junior associate to join the firm’s Washington, DC office and work primarily in our antitrust litigation practice area.

This position offers the opportunity for extremely substantive, interesting, and challenging work with recognized leaders in the antitrust bar, including several partners recognized among the top antitrust practitioners in the world. With more than 50 lawyers in the U.S., and more than 60 in Europe, the majority of whom work in antitrust, our expertise is unrivaled. In addition to antitrust, Hausfeld attorneys litigate mass torts, environmental threats, consumer protection, and human rights cases. Our diverse team of attorneys has been appointed by federal courts to lead the nation’s most complex class actions. We have successfully litigated and negotiated some of the largest settlements ever reached in cases against multinational corporations engaged in price-fixing cartels.

Hausfeld is proud of our role representing clients in both individual and class action litigation seeking private enforcement of antitrust laws. In fact, the Legal 500 called Hausfeld “one of the most capable plaintiffs’ firms involved in the area of civil cartel enforcement,” and “[w]idely recognized as a market leader for claimant-side competition litigation.” We see our role as complementary to that of the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, in that we prosecute violations of U.S. antitrust laws to ensure fair markets and fair prices for all. Unlike the government agencies, our goal is to ensure that the victims of antitrust violations are appropriately compensated for their losses. Although no antitrust experience is necessary, applicants should be enthusiastic about this mission-driven work and the opportunity to dive into complex problem-solving challenges, while gaining experience in every area of litigation.

Associates at Hausfeld take a substantial role in investigating and analyzing potential claims, drafting legal memos, complaints, and briefs, managing  all phases of discovery (including taking and defending depositions), and , preparing for and attending trials, and participating in settlement discussions for complex litigation cases, among other responsibilities. A strong academic background and excellent writing skills and analytic ability are required, as is the ability to manage and thrive in a fast-paced work environment. We are looking for someone who is a team player, a self-starter, highly organized, and able to juggle multiple responsibilities. The position’s start date is flexible and applicants currently in clerkships are encouraged to apply.

Hausfeld offers generous benefits, including five weeks paid time off and paid parental leave.

To apply, please send an email to hiring@hausfeld.com with your cover letter, resume, transcript, and writing sample.
