The successful candidate must have experience with the following: review invention disclosures, conduct prior art searches, interview inventors, prepare full patent applications and drawings, and prosecute applications including examiner interviews, amendments, and appeal briefs. Experience with trademark prosecution including oppositions and cancellations as well as client counseling including preparing opinions is desirable.     2019-2020 CORPORATION COUNSEL HONORS FELLOW

    Each year, in addition to hiring a 50 person entry class, the Law Department hires one Corporation Counsel Honors Fellow to work closely with Corporation Counsel Zachary Carter and other members of the Department’s senior staff on significant legal and policy issues pertaining to municipal governance.  The Honors Fellow enjoys a behind the scenes view into the operations and governance of the City of New York with a focus on the major legal issues facing the City during the course of the fellowship year.

    Honors Fellow applicants are welcome to express interest in working closely with specific divisions. Past Honors Fellows have gained significant experience in legal counseling and advising, legislative drafting, real estate transactions, trial court level litigation, and appellate litigation.  Fellowship applicants may also request assignments in specific areas of the law such as employment, land use, tax certiorari, constitutional, administrative, environmental and commercial law.  Learn more about the 16 legal divisions at the Law Department on our website - https://www1.nyc.gov/site/law/divisions/legal-divisions.page.  

    Applicants for the Fellowship Program must have a record of academic excellence and a demonstrable interest in urban affairs and governance.  Applicants must be graduating law school in 2019 or be no more than three years out of law school and either admitted to the New York State bar or in the process of becoming admitted.  Successful candidates will be chosen by a committee of senior executives at the Law Department. The Fellowship stipend will be equal to the salary of a first year attorney at the NYC Law Department, which is currently $68,494, plus City employee benefits.

    Applications should include a resume, writing sample, law school transcript and three references.  In addition, applicants must submit a statement of interest of no more than 500 words including a discussion of what legal issues and experiences they would be most interested in exploring through the Honors Fellowship.

    Congressional Oversight Fellowships

    Please share this with anyone you know who may be interested. This is a great fit for anyone with proven investigating/research/digging chops looking to learn more about Congressional investigations.

    We work extremely hard to ensure placements in offices that will give real experience in major Congressional oversight. And the fellowships pay well - between $80,000 and $108,000 - plus a stipend for health insurance and reimbursement for certain relocation expenses, if you have to move to DC. 

    This year, our fellows are serving at the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  You can read more about our current fellows here.

    The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) is a non-profit law firm that has transformed how public agencies support our country’s most vulnerable children, including foster youth, students with disabilities, child sex trafficking victims, youth in the juvenile justice system, and children of color.

    We are seeking law students to serve as Spring and Summer law clerks/interns in Washington DC. NCYL is looking for applicants with strong writing skills and a strong commitment to social justice. In particular, applicants should demonstrate interest in protecting the rights of low-income children and youth. Under the mentorship of their supervising attorneys, law clerks will research novel issues within youth law, write legal memoranda, and assist in ongoing and incipient litigation.  NCYL is committed to hiring a group of law students that reflects the racial and cultural diversity of our clients.

    The North Carolina League of Municipalities (NCLM) is initiating the recruitment process for an Assistant General Counsel. The purpose of this position is to provide League members with legal guidance and consultation on a broad range of municipal issues, provide training and education for municipal officials, provide technical appellate assistance and amicus advocacy to support the membership on issues of statewide significance, and assist the General Counsel in providing in- house legal services to the League’s internal departments, its insurance pools, its governing bodies, and its affiliated organizations. This is accomplished by researching and providing legal opinions and guidance; reviewing and drafting contract provisions; analyzing and interpreting proposed legislation and regulations; drafting legislation, model ordinances, and charter provisions; formulating and recommending strategies; writing amicus briefs to be submitted to the appellate courts and providing technical assistance to position cases for appellate success; providing educational materials and presentations to municipal staff and elected officials; and serving affiliate organizations. The hiring range for this position is $74,480 to $93,100.

    Position details include:

     Provides guidance, information, and assistance to member municipal officials on a broad range of municipal legal issues by responding to oral and written inquiries; researching case law and interpreting statutes; analyzing ordinances; drafting and recommending document revisions; drafting model ordinances; revising charters; drafting legal correspondence and memoranda; identifying and providing resource material; drafting publications such as the Legislative Digest, Municipal Law Notes, Southern City columns, handbooks and reference guides; and recommending best practices.

     Engages in appellate advocacy by researching and drafting amicus motions and briefs on significant issues before the state appellate courts. Provides technical assistance to help position municipal cases for success on appeal, including strategic and procedural advice, research, drafting and review, and moot court sessions. Assists legislative advocacy efforts by analyzing proposed legislation and state agency rules; drafting legislation, amendments, bill summaries, and other documents; assisting with formulation of strategies; providing legal research; and responding to inquiries regarding legal implications and potential impacts.

     Assists General Counsel in providing legal counsel on a variety of issues to internal staff and departments and to League Board of Directors and Risk Management Board of Trustees and their committees. May include contract review; ethics and lobbying laws compliance; taxation issues; insurance pool issues; endorsed vendors program; revisions to constitution, bylaws and other governing documents; employment issues and policies; liability; and others.

    Minimum Qualifications:

     Applicants must have a Law degree and admission to the North Carolina Bar.

     Applicants must have the following; excellent communication, presentation, research, and writing skills; the ability to tailor message to audience and interact with a wide variety of elected and appointed officials; and ability to work in a team environment with a commitment to customer service.

     Professional experience with a North Carolina local government or state agency in a relevant subject area is preferred.

     Other experience with the laws, regulations, principles, and practices of North Carolina local government will be considered.

    Skills/Certifications/License Required:

     Valid Class C Driver's License.

     This position reports to the General Counsel and is located in Raleigh, NC.

    Information Security Senior-Level Associate/Counsel

    The ideal candidate will have at least five years of privacy and security experience, including incident response and security remediation counseling, and will have a demonstrated interest in practical information security risk management.  We are looking for someone who is a self-starter, highly detail-oriented, comfortable with direct client contact, and comfortable interacting with C-suite executives and IT department heads. 

    Excellent communication skills, academic credentials and strong analytical and writing skills are required.  An IT background or demonstrated technical interest is preferred and IAPP or CISSP certification is a plus.  Active membership in the DC Bar in good standing is required or at least plans to apply for membership in the DC Bar shortly after commencing employment.

    Among other duties, this position may include: (i) researching legal principles and precedents; (ii) drafting and negotiating data use agreements and various non-disclosure agreements;  (iii) drafting information security policies and procedures; (iv) implementing data security advice with a practical risk-focused lens; (v) drafting and reviewing data privacy policies, including data privacy policies for websites and mobile apps; (vi) assisting with information security risk assessments; (vii) assisting with responses to privacy and information security incidents; (viii) assisting with responses to regulatory complaints and investigations, and related matters; (ix) providing general data privacy and security counseling to clients; and (x) conducting privacy / information security deal due diligence.  This candidate also has the opportunity to be cross-trained in functional enterprise IT architecture, system/software development and threat hunting to guide legal risk discussions.
