    American Progress has an immediate opening for a Counsel on its in-house legal team. The Legal team manages legal and compliance matters for both the Center for American Progress, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and educational think tank, as well as its affiliated organization, the Center for American Progress Action Fund—a 501(c)(4) organization.

    The Legal team advises both organizations on a broad array of legal issues, including nonprofit tax, lobbying, ethics, corporate governance, intellectual property, data privacy, media, employment, and contract law. It designs and implements legal compliance procedures and works with management, staff, and consultants to respond to daily legal needs and help ensure ongoing compliance in a fast-paced and mission-driven environment.

    The United States Court of Appeals for the D.C.     Responsibilities: As an attorney in the Bureau of Competition, you will perform a variety of legal duties relative to cases or legal issues of extreme difficulty. Often the work of the staff includes advisory functions related to antitrust enforcement policy under the various statutes enforced by the Commission. A successful staff member has interest in and the ability to deal with both legal analysis and economic and practical business issues arising from the matters under investigation. Candidates should have excellent legal research and writing abilities, strong organizational and analytical skills in presenting written argument and excellent oral communications skills. Candidates also should be able to work effectively with other people, exercise sound judgment, and exhibit a strong interest in the work of the agency.

    More specifically, incumbents of this position will:

    • Conduct all phases of antitrust merger or conduct investigations, including making initial determinations as to whether cases should be investigated, identifying legal theories and plans for preliminary investigations, obtaining evidence from a variety of sources, and negotiating settlements.
    • Confer with government agencies, public authorities, attorneys, businesspersons, and other members of the public to obtain information relevant to Commission investigations and to provide them with information on matters of law, Commission procedures, and policy.
    • Prepare antitrust cases for trial by securing and preparing evidence, conferring with witnesses, participating in pretrial conferences, examining and cross-examining witnesses, and drafting legal documents needed during the various stages of litigation.
    • Assist other attorneys in preparing and prosecuting the most complex cases.
    • Prepare internal documents for review by the Commission and perform special assignments as directed.

    Public Rights Project is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating the gap between the values expressed in our laws and the lived reality of our most vulnerable communities. We empower state, local, and tribal governments to protect the core rights and freedoms that define us as Americans by providing them with talent and resources to more proactively enforce their residents’ legal rights.

    We are currently searching for applicants for the 2021-23 Public Rights Project Fellowship, a two year program for early- to mid-career level attorneys interested in public service and affirmative litigation. Fellows have the opportunity to be placed in one of eight local and state government offices across the country.

    The fellowship pays a yearly stipend calculated based on the fellow’s legal experience, cost of living in the fellow’s placement city, and the average pay of other attorneys in the fellow’s placement office. Generally, the stipend will range from $60,000-$80,000.

    The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law seeks a hard-working lawyer with significant legal experience to serve as counsel. 

    Responsibilities include: serving as a resource for Democratic Members of the Subcommittee on matters of law and policy; drafting legislation; coordinating hearings and witnesses; drafting statements, memos, and briefing materials; and providing guidance to offices both on and off the Subcommittee on matters of antitrust law.
     
    A strong background in antitrust is required. Exceptional writing skills, sound political judgment, and the ability to work closely and collaboratively with other congressional offices and advocacy organizations are also strongly preferred.

    Job Description: 

    As an Attorney Advisor, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing critical legal advice and technical services in support of the OIG's core oversight mission. OGC Attorney Advisors are experienced attorneys who have previously served as civil litigators (in government and private practice), prosecutors, defense counsel, and agency counsel. OGC Attorney Advisors handle a broad range of long-term and short-term assignments, develop expertise in a wide variety of legal and policy issues, and interact with management and staff across the OIG.
     
    Typical work assignments include:
     
    1. Providing legal opinions or memoranda on complex and difficult issues of law relevant to general OIG operations or to particular OIG audits, investigations, inspections, or reviews, which encompass criminal, national security, ethics, and other issues.2. Engaging in meetings, personal contacts, and telephone conferences with top legal and administrative personnel in the Department of Justice and other federal agencies, on important legal and policy questions and issues.3. Acting as the principal attorney in charge of the preparation and presentation of cases before administrative bodies, and serving as the OIG's liaison with the litigating DOJ component in litigation to which the OIG is a party.4. Analyzing and preparing recommendations for OIG responses to requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), and reviewing OIG reports for Privacy Act protected and proprietary information to clear such reports for public release.5. Consulting and coordinating with OIG investigators in preparing recommendations for suspension and debarment actions by the Department against financially irresponsible parties doing business with the Department.

    • Assisting the Chief Immigration Judge and/or Deputy Chief Immigration Judge in managing and coordinating Immigration Judge activities and in supervising the administrative operations of the program.
    • Assisting in development of policy and procedure for the operations of the program, determining and accounting for resource needs, evaluating and adjusting broad objectives as needed, determining need for and effecting changes in organizational structure and delegation of authority, and establishing effective internal and external communication channels.
    • Participating with the Chief Immigration Judge and/or Deputy Chief Immigration Judge in the formulation of Executive Office for Immigration Review programs and policies.
    • Analyzing programs and projects and prepares reports to the Deputy Chief Immigration Judge, recommending adoption or rejection of policy changes.
    • Providing legal counsel and advice to the Chief Immigration Judge and/or Deputy Chief Immigration Judge on matters pertaining to the Immigration and Nationality Act and all other applicable law.
