    The Law School's Career Development Office of The George Washington University advises and counsels students and alumni in professional development and assists them in developing career strategies. We are seeking a Sr. Law Career Counselor who will join our team to provide individual counseling to our law students regarding career planning and job searches through self-assessment, resume and cover letter review, interview preparation, professional skills development, career research and career options. This position will report to the Dean of the Career Development Office with the following duties and responsibilities:

    • Assists students in determining career goals and objectives through self-evaluation; assesses articulated career interests and recommends avenues of exploration to meet goals. Advises and counsels students on matters related to career and professional development and the legal job search process. Refers students and recent alumni to mentors and other professional contacts.
    • Develops and conducts skills development workshops on all components of the job search process, i.e., resume and cover letter writing, developing professional contacts, special applications and interviewing skills, and job search resources. Develops written informational materials on basic career guidance issues such as resume and cover letter writing, networking and interviewing.
    • Organizes and implements seminar programs and panel discussions on a variety of legal and alternative career topics, both independently and in conjunction with alumni and student groups.
    • Coordinates and participates in marketing and promotion of Career Center programs and services to students, alumni, and employers, including through social media. Assists with the maintenance of the Career Center's blog, Facebook, and Twitter accounts, which are the primary platforms for communicating information to all students.
    • Drafts articles and materials for student newspapers, alumni publications, professional association newsletters, and law school briefings.
    • Maintains positive relationships with employers, alumni, students, staff and faculty and serves as a consultant to faculty on the career and professional development of students and alumni. Tracks and maintains employment data for current students and/or recent alumni.
    • As required, represents the Career Center at national, regional and local meetings of appropriate professional organizations and associations, and periodically interfaces with law career counselors at other law schools. Assists with the programming, coordination and delivery during all phases of networking fairs, job fairs, recruitment programs, and other career development programs, which may include travel
    • Performs other work related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    • JD degree strongly preferred.
    • Counseling experience with law students.
    • Strong career planning, guidance, and mentorship skills are required, as well as knowledge and understanding of career practices and opportunities within the legal community.

    Legal Counsel: Voting Rights

    About the Campaign Legal Center (CLC):

    The Campaign Legal Center (CLC), is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC. Through litigation, policy analysis and public education, CLC works to protect and strengthen the U.S. democratic process across all levels of government. CLC is adamantly nonpartisan, holding candidates and government officials accountable regardless of political affiliation.

    CLC was founded in 2002 and is a recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. Our work today is more critical than ever as we fight the current threats to our democracy in the areas of campaign finance, voting rights, redistricting, and ethics. Most recently, CLC argued Gill v. Whitford, the groundbreaking Supreme Court case seeking to end extreme partisan gerrymandering. In addition, CLC plays a leading watchdog role on ethics issues, providing expert analysis and helping journalists uncover ethical violations. CLC participates in legal proceedings across the country to defend the right to vote.

    Position Summary

    CLC’s voting rights team engages in various forms of advocacy—including administrative and local advocacy, legal research and reporting, educational efforts, legislative drafting, amicus filings, and trial and appellate litigation—to protect the fundamental right to vote. CLC has recently co-created a collaborative project, All Voting is Local, with the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation (ACLU), the American Constitution Society (ACS), the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyers’ Committee), and The Leadership Conference Education Fund (and its project, Access Democracy) (LCEF). The project seeks to identify, prevent, and remedy voting barriers at the local level in targeted jurisdictions. Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, Voting Rights & Redistricting, the Legal Counsel will play an integral role in the voting rights team. Legal Counsel will be the primary staff member assigned to providing legal support and research for the All Voting is Local project.

    This work will include developing and drafting affirmative policy and legislative proposals, and conducting research and drafting advocacy letters to counter negative proposals. Legal Counsel will also participate in the voting rights program’s docket, including identifying litigation opportunities, drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs, managing discovery, and assisting with trial and appellate proceedings.

    This position is currently fully funded for one year. Continuation of the position is expected but contingent on renewal of dedicated funding.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    • Research and report on election administration issues at the local level.
    • Advise All Voting is Local staff on voting rights issues as they are addressed.
    • Draft administrative and local advocacy materials for the All Voting is Local project.
    • Draft pleadings, motions, and briefs in federal and state cases
    • Research legal issues and draft legal memoranda in support of CLC’s litigation strategy
    • Monitor and identify litigation opportunities and needs in area of voting rights
    • Participate in trial proceedings
    • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications and Skills

    • At least one year of legal experience (a judicial clerkship satisfies this requirement)

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia (OAG) seeks a Director of the Office of Consumer Protection (OCP). OCP resides in the Public Advocacy Division (PAD) of OAG; the Director reports to the Deputy Attorney General for PAD and works closely with the Attorney General and Chief Deputy. The Director is the lead lawyer responsible for planning, directing, and managing OCP. OCP enforces the District's consumer protection laws and mediates disputes between consumers and businesses. It investigates businesses that are taking advantage of consumers and can bring lawsuits to stop unlawful practices, obtain restitution for consumers who have been harmed, and the payment of penalties and costs to the District. OCP also drafts and supports legislation that protects consumers, and educates consumers through outreach events, an up-to-date online Consumer Resources library, and the distribution of consumer protection guides.

    The Director leads the litigation and other programming of OCP, manages its attorneys and staff, and serves as a leader in OAG. Duties include:

     Establishing priorities, policies and procedures for OCP;

     Directly supervising all lawyers and administrative staff in the Office, including overseeing all phases of litigation and other program work, providing training and professional development opportunities, evaluating performance, and managing personnel-related issues;

     Managing complex litigation, including local and national civil enforcement of cases, prosecutions, negotiations and litigation;

     Leading and participating in large, multistate investigations and litigation of relevance to the District;

     Overseeing a program to intake, evaluate, and potentially investigate consumer complaints;

     Engaging the public on consumer education through town hall meetings, media, and outreach materials, and reaching out to community and legal services groups to amplify OAG’s work;

     Developing legislative proposals to strengthen existing District of Columbia consumer protection laws;

     Advising the Attorney General, Chief Deputy, and other senior government officials on legal and policy issues related to consumers; and

    QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have substantive knowledge of relevant laws, policies and practices relating to consumer protection, prior litigation experience, and strong writing and research skills. The candidate must also have strong management and organization skills, and possess the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including law enforcement, legislators, state and federal agencies and agency staff.

    ELIGIBILITY: The successful candidate must have a law degree and be an active member in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction. If not a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the candidate must be sworn into the District of Columbia Bar within 360 days of his/her initial appointment with the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.

    PRIORITY CONSIDERATION: Displaced Employee Priority Placement: Candidates who are eligible for the District of Columbia’s Displaced Employee Program (DEP) and Agency Reemployment Priority Placement Program (ARPP) will be given priority consideration for this position if found qualified.

    EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS: Selectee will be eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the District of Columbia government’s retirement plan. However, if selectee was previously employed in the District of Columbia’s government under an appointment for which he/she was eligible for Civil Service Retirement (CSR), contributions to CSR will resume upon re-employment.
