    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Public Safety Division of the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia believes that the challenges that face the criminal justice system today require innovative and unique solutions. OAG seeks a trial attorney for the Criminal Section who is a team player and highly motivated to be a prosecutor and trial attorney.     The Criminal Section prosecutes adults who commit certain types of offenses within the District of Columbia, including all adult misdemeanor traffic and quality of life offenses. Specifically, the Section prosecutes all alcohol and drug impaired driving cases, certain firearm offenses, quality of life offenses such as indecent exposure to adults and children, as well as tax and welfare fraud matters. Duties include interviewing and preparing police and civilian witnesses; making charging decisions; researching, writing, and litigating motions; and managing all aspects of a trial calendar from intake through sentencing, including bench and jury trials. The Public Safety Division’s management is dedicated to extensive training and attentive support for its

    Assistant Attorney Generals, providing an atmosphere where their prosecutors learn to exercise discretion and sound judgment and can grow into strong, ethical, and confident trial attorneys.

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Youth involved in the juvenile justice system present myriad issues that may contribute to their court involvement. The District of Columbia Office of Attorney General seeks a creative and motivated trial attorney for the Juvenile Section of its Public Safety Division, which handles all juvenile prosecutions in the District of Columbia and cases involving delinquency offenses. The Section has jurisdiction to charge a juvenile for any criminal offense under the D.C. Code, Federal Code, or D.C. Municipal Regulations. Section attorneys work closely with other juvenile justice stakeholders to make appropriate charging decisions, interact with victims and witnesses, evaluate appropriate dispositions for involved juveniles, and litigate appropriate cases in the Superior Court’s Family Division. The selected attorney will manage a caseload involving juvenile offenders and be expected to both litigate and develop comprehensive rehabilitative resolutions that will ensure the public safety.

    Trial attorneys engage in all aspects of criminal litigation, including interviewing and preparing for testimony police and civilian witnesses, making charging decisions, researching, writing and litigating motions, managing all aspects of a trial calendar from intake through sentencing, and conducting community outreach.

    QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have one to five years of trial experience, the ability to work across disciplines, and the ability to work with a high degree of independence. The ideal candidate should

    also have a demonstrated commitment to work in the area of prosecution, with a sincere passion for seeking justice including through treatment courts and creative resolutions.

    Members of the bench, bar, and public are hereby notified by the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission (the “Commission”) that a vacancy on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia will occur as a result of the retirement of the Honorable Russell F.     The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia is seeking a trial attorney for the Family Services Division, Child Protection Section.

    Attorneys in the Child Protection Sections represent the District of Columbia on behalf of the Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) in an attorney-client relationship in child abuse and neglect cases in the Family Court of the D.C. Superior Court. There are four Child Protection Sections and attorneys in these sections handle all aspects of child neglect litigation on behalf of the District and CFSA, from petitioning through the achievement of permanency. Attorneys are responsible for petitioning new cases alleging child abuse or neglect, propounding and/or responding to discovery, filing and/or responding to pre-trial motions, participating in mediation, preparing witnesses to testify at trial, and presenting evidence at trial.

    The attorneys also represent CFSA post-adjudication with the goal of ultimately securing a safe and permanent home for children through reunification, adoption or guardianship. In the post-adjudication phase of a neglect case, attorneys are responsible for representing CFSA at review of disposition, status and permanency hearings, participating in evidentiary hearings, filing motions and responsive pleadings. In addition, the attorneys provide advice and counsel to social workers and other professionals from CFSA regarding compliance with local and federal law, participate in team meetings as necessary, and work with various multi-disciplinary team members. Attorneys simultaneously maintain a trial caseload and post-adjudication caseload.

    QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have 1-5 years of experience, and must possess strong negotiation, litigation and analytical skills. A demonstrated commitment to work in the area of child welfare is preferred, but not required.

    The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Senior Policy Counsel who is responsible for developing and implementing CVT’s policy advocacy strategy to ensure that asylum seekers and refugees have access to protection in the U.S. The Senior Policy Counsel will also support to varying degrees CVT’s policy priorities in two other areas: obtaining federal financial support for torture survivor rehabilitation centers in the U.S. and abroad and ensuring that the U.S. never returns to policies of torture and cruelty. The position reports to the Director of the Washington DC Office and serves on the Policy Team.

    Organization:

    The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Atlanta and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.

    Responsibilities:

    • Issue-based Policy Advocacy: Lead development and implementation of strategies to ensure the U.S. has strong policies in place to allow refugees and asylum seekers to access protection. Engage with Congress and the Administration to achieve those objectives.
    • Appropriations Advocacy: Support appropriations advocacy related to funding for torture survivor rehabilitation and other relevant refugee and migration accounts.
    • Strategic Partnerships: Participate in formal and informal NGO coalitions to advance policy positions, including providing consultative and advisory services on public policy to other torture survivor rehabilitation organizations. Serve as a representative of the organization and foster relationships that advance organizational priorities.
    • Internal Coordination: Coordinate with other CVT departments to stay updated on challenges faced by CVT clients that may have policy implications and provide feedback to relevant CVT staff on debates in Washington DC concerning U.S. asylum or refugee-related policies.
    • Other Duties: Participate in other department and organization-wide activities, meetings and trainings. Complete administrative responsibilities. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

    • J.D. or Master’s Degree in public policy or related field.
    • 3 years of experience in immigration law, with a focus on asylum seekers.
    • 3 years of experience in issue advocacy or experience as a lobbyist.

    Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

    • 3-5 years of policy advocacy experience focused on human rights or refugee rights.
    • Experience working directly with refugees and engaging them in advocacy.

    Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

    • Knowledge of issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in the U.S.
    • Knowledge of the unique challenges facing survivors of torture seeking asylum in the U.S.

    Our firm Calderón Seguin PLC is seeking to hire a full-time criminal law associate attorney. We are a small firm located in Fairfax, VA and accessible from the Dunn Loring metro stop.     DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Domestic Violence Section is seeking a Trial Attorney for its civil protection order practice. The attorney’s primary responsibility will be prosecuting criminal contempt actions for violations of civil protection orders. The attorneys vertically prosecute their cases so each attorney is responsible for investigating reports of violations; making charging decisions; fulfilling discovery obligations; resolving cases through declination, diversion, plea agreement or trial; and monitoring compliance with any post-conviction conditions.

    The attorney will also represent survivors obtaining civil protection orders in all aspects of civil litigation involving the order. The caseload will include intimate partner, dating violence, family violence, stalking, and sexual assault cases. The attorney will be expected to work closely with colleagues from public and private agencies in seeking a broad range of remedies for survivors.

    Position Description – The Circuit Mediator screens eligible cases for referral to mediation, conducts mediations, assigns cases to mediators, trains and advises lawyers who serve as volunteer mediators, and educates the bar and public about the mediation programs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia. Located in Washington, D.C., the Circuit Mediator reports to the Chief Circuit Mediator and works with the judges of the Courts to carry out the mission of the mediation programs.

    Qualifications – Significant experience and expertise in mediation and other ADR processes. An understanding of the dynamics, costs, impacts, and strategies of the litigation process. Strong customer service orientation with excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Progressively responsible litigation experience in which a substantial portion involved cases in federal trial and appellate courts with a minimum of three years of experience to qualify for a CL 30 or four years of experience to qualify for a CL 31.

    Education – Must have a law degree and be a member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory, the District of Columbia, or a federal court of general jurisdiction.

    Salary – CL 30/31 ($89,600 - $161,900) depending on qualifications. Position may be filled by one full-time employee or shared by two part-time employees.

    Conditions of Employment – Applicants must be a United States citizen or eligible to work in the United States. Employees of the federal courts are excepted service appointments. Excepted service appointments are “at will” and may be terminated with or without good cause by the Court. The candidate selected for the position will be hired provisionally pending the results of a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
